Practicing freestanding handstands or doing handstands against a wall and trying to take your feet off the wall for as long as possible will help increase your balancing abilities like no other exercise can.

Why I LOVE Being upside down!
I love inversions. I love the challenge of trying to stay balanced. Headstands, forearm stands, and handstands are all kinds of balancing inversions. Headstands are the easiest inversion since your head and your forearms are planted on the ground. Handstands are the hardest (I think), because only your hands are holding your body up. So that leaves forearm stands right in the middle with a moderate level of difficulty. You may find them easier than handstands, since both your forearms are helping you to stay balanced. Plus, you are lower to the ground, so you may find this easier to get into. This pose has a lot to do with shoulder and upper back strength, but it's also about engaging your core muscles.

Work your handstand
The most commonly seen handstand pushup is the version facing away from the wall. However, when done incorrectly, this teaches an overextended back position and an incorrect pushup position. The first piece of any handstand progression is developing a hollow body position where you are able to maintain a neutral spine. (hollow rocks anyone?) Once you can maintain a neutral spine while on the ground, it is time to start practicing the hollow position while inverted.

International Handstand Day/ Sunday June 26th/
GO UPSIDE DOWN WITH EVERYONE!

Click Website Here:
This will be the first ever International Handstand Day to celebrate the art of standing upside down! Just take a picture or video of you on that day and post it. I think doing handstands is the best party trick ever, so might as well make it worldwide.
BTW, you don't have to be able to do a handstand. You can put your feet against a wall, or have someone spot you. And no it doesn't technically have be a handstand. It can be a headstand, a scorpion, some sort of yoga inversion. But you can't just turn your camera upsidedown and shoot. THAT would be cheating :=(
And, I need some help. If you're in Las Vegas, or going to be here, we're going to have a giant handstand meeting place, preferably somewhere public where lots of people will gawk and stare increduously on Sunday June 26.
Oh but don't worry, wherever you are, if you don't have a group going, just do yer handstand somewhere and post it. Make sure you put where you are cause it IS International Handstand Day afterall.

Turn your world upside-down

Supporting your weight with your weaker extremities requires much more than just strength. It requires balance, composure, respiratory endurance, and... well, strength. When standing upright, the hips are the base of balance and power. When you are inverted, the shoulders become center stage. The center of balance also changes dramatically when the weight distribution is shifted to a higher position.

Benefits of Yoga for the CrossFitter

The benefits of yoga are unlimited. The obvious is the increased flexibility throughout the muscular system, but there is so much more. The CrossFitter can benefit by increasing mobility in the joints, thus increasing range of motion for overall enhanced performance. The CrossFitter will be able to reach farther, fall harder while preventing and minimizing injuries because their muscles have a memory (like a rubber band) from the deep stretching obtained in practicing yoga on a regular basis. Without stretching CrossFit is good at increasing strength and muscle mass but, it dramatically decreases flexibility. However, if yoga or other types of prolonged stretching are practiced in combination with CrossFit injury can be minimized. With yoga, a CrossFitter will not only increase flexibility but also increase poise and balance from the practice of the yoga balancing poses. This type of balancing will enhance CrossFit performance by enabling the athlete to prevent falls because of his heightened awareness of his bodies center place. When balancing poses are mastered the athlete is then conditioned to unconsciously recover from any imbalances their body may experience, staying centered in action, moment by moment during a WOD.
