Does sex prior to training or competing hinder your performance?

This article from Freddy Camacho

It’s been a long standing belief in many professional sports circles that sex prior to competition will hinder your performance. The belief goes all the way back to the ancient Greeks who believed that sex lowered testosterone levels thus making athletes weaker and less aggressive. Tons of modern day professional athletes still follow the abstinence policy. In the last World Cup, one team had a coach who forbade his athletes from having sex 24 hours before and 24 hours after a game. (After too?!?!?) In the fighting world almost all fighters believe that sex before a big fight is bad for performance. Manny Pacquiao and George St. Pierre have both stated publicly that they abstain from sex prior to a fight. Mohammed Ali abstained from sex for two months prior to a fight and claimed it made him unbeatable in the ring. Rocky Marciano abstained from sex for several months prior to a big fight. Interestingly enough, he was the only heavyweight fighter to retire undefeated…

So, if you want to have a good workout, don’t get your groove on in the sack prior to coming to the gym, right??? Not necessarily. There are actually scientists that study sex and athletic performance. How you get into that field I have no idea, but I guess someone has to do it! Various tests have been done measuring athletic performance on groups that have sex before exercise and groups abstaining from sex. Test results show no difference in athletic performance. Joe Namath claimed that he always had sex the night before a game because it helped him relax and think clearly come game time. Oscar De La Hoya claims that he had sex with his girlfriend the night before his best performance ever in the boxing ring. The Romans believed that sex actually revitalized sluggish athletes.

Some other facts I found while reading about this topic:

•Sex actually raises testosterone level in both sexes. Tests done on female fighters showed that their punches were much more powerful after sex. Lesson: Don’t piss your girl off right after you’re done….
•Sex on average lasts anywhere from 2 minutes to 45 minutes. A guy that I work with told me he ALWAYS has sex with his girlfriend for 45 minutes or longer. When I informed him the time spent trying to talk her into having sex doesn’t count, he realized his “average” time was around the 3 minute mark.
•Sex between married couples burns 25-50 calories, similar to the same amount of energy to walk up two flights of stairs. I am pretty sure all of you can walk up two flights of stairs and still do today’s workout, unless, of course, you're getting your freaky stair walking technique on.....
•Some subjects experience a rise in heart rate from 70 bpm at rest to up to 130 bpm during sex, but compared to the exertion required during a soccer match, sex requires less than 25% of the aerobic effort. (What exactly does that say about soccer???)
•People that engage in sex regularly are less prone to heart disease and live longer lives on average. Who needs CrossFit and Paleo dieting?!?!
So what’s the final word? Sex before training or competition…good or bad? I have no idea. I just thought the song was funny……...
