I have been a strength and conditioning coach for almost eight years now andthrough this time, there have been many constants. One important constant that all athletes must have is a yearly training plan. If you expect to keep the desire and health you will need throughout a long competitive career, you need to give yourself time off from the sport, change training focus from time to time, and keep your in-season training highly effective. Not having a plan, or map, on how to attain goals will only mean that you are shooting in the dark and relying on luck to get to your desired end point. My hope with this article is to help you create that plan or at least lead you in the right direction. Although I will talk about all phases of a yearly training plan, my intent is to focus on the pre-season.
