Remove the meditative element from Ashtanga yoga and you have the same 5000 year old gymnastic basics written in Sanskrit: L-sit, split, backbend, pushup, planche, forearm-stand, and handstand. I can definitely see more similarity to Yoga and Crossfit now, than in modern gymnastics. Crossfit movements are especially Yoga-like. In Crossfit we even do a hindu pushup, then shoot through to a seated position. There is definitely a greater emphasis on flexibility, grace and balance. Today, it is much faster, more powerful, higher, etc. But everything from 1936 to now blows me away. I love it, all of it.
